It might be a long way from restoring law and order to restoring VW Campervans, but it’s been a successful one for Director Mark Ritson. His Morecambe based business ‘Morecambe and Wize Sales Ltd” continues to find top gear with year on year growth as orders for the iconic 1960’s and 70’s camper vans roll in, not just from the United Kingdom, but also from overseas; Morecambe and Wize will be the only company in the World importing Classic Vw Campervans to legally use on the roads in mainland China!
Founded in 2008 as a part time concern as Mark was also a Policeman with the Cumbria Constabulary, three years later it became a full time concern as a gap in the market was quickly established. The primary focus in the early days was to hire them out to would be holidaymakers heading to the Lakes although the need to sell them soon became apparent. Mark Says” We bought out first off the Internet from America and sub contracted it out to various companies. Two other sector business approached him to also supply them and the ball started rolling from there”.
With global expansion plans already taking hold, deals are being made with both New Zealand and China distributors. Mark says “by working with local government initiatives, we have been able to invest heavily in machinery and plant operations with expansion into new premises at the end of the year. The new CNC machine, Spray Booth, Compressor and Blast Room equipment will help increase production from 26 units in 2015, to 32 units in 2016. Not only will this further increase turnover for 2016 (the company boasted a massive leap from £324k to £750k in 2014 > 2015, quite a feat given the rest of the UK industry being in recovery!) but this is also safeguarding 2 new jobs and creating another 3 bring total number to 10, as well as those working though external marketing and social media agencies to help support the growing business. The five-year agency agreement signed earlier in 2015 with a company in China means Morecambe and Wize now export to six countries throughout the globe.
Mark says ” because what we do is a niche market, our business model is completely different to other companies in the market sector. We are very good at portraying what we do. Our values are based on teamwork, and transparency with both our National, and International customers. Yes I make the decisions as Director, but everyone has an input, which is why I believe we have very good employee retention. Everyone takes ownership for their part of the business, which is essential when dealing with the frustrations of restoring old vehicles. The restoration process is one which requires patience from both staff, and customers alike”
Campervans are brought in from the USA and Brazil with each restored van taking around 740 hours to complete the six-month process split over four different departments. Traditionally restorers will call on other business to assist in the project but Mark believes it is by bringing all the processes under one roof that will lead to a higher quality product and ultimately a better experience for the customer. Whichever way you look at it, Morecambe and Wize look set to be motoring into the future.
